Day 1: India to Singapore

Read about our day 1 Journey and how to keep up with your budget. Part of the 5 part series https://voicezz.wordpress.com/2017/08/20/how-you-can-visit-singapore-within-rs-50000/

We took off from Bangalore, India at 9:40 pm. It was a direct 4 hour flight. We reached Singapore at 4:30 am. We decided to wait couple of hours after the immigration checkout in the airport and collect the MRT tourist pass at the airport. The MRT ticket booth opens at 8AM.

**MRT Passes allows you to use the unlimited metro and the local buses in Singapore.  http://thesingaporetouristpass.com.sg/ . We took the unlimited pass for 3 days which was $20 per person with $10 refundable deposit.

We took a cab to our Hotel – The Claremont Hotel, little India. I had booked the hotel in advance from goibibo, where I was able to grab some discounts! As for the cab, well  I just downloaded Grab application to book a cab and got $10 off for the first ride. We reached the hotel at just $11. Luckily our hotel let us do an early check in at 9:30 am itself! Else usually their check in is at noon. To be completely honest this hotel is a 2 star hotel and not so great. But it is located very close to the Farrer park MRT station and it just made our commute very easy!! Anyways, we just needed a place to crash and freshen up. The complimentary breakfast which comes with the hotel is not that great either.

We quickly ate ready to eat cuppa noodles for breakfast, freshened up and left to explore the city. Our first stop was the Singapore flyer. I had my whole iternary ready in my hands with every single detail including how to reach there. We took the MRT from Farrer park to promanade station and walked over to the flyer by 11:30.  Flyer was amazing! It takes 30 mins to complete the full rotation and you get the complete view of the city. Many people prefer to go to flyer at sunset to get a good view or have a dinner in the flyer. But I had lots of other night view planned 🙂

We then walked over to the marina bay sands where there was a food court in the mall. we had our lunch here. Difficult to find vegetarian food, but we managed to get rice and daal. Yep something is better than nothing – cant complain! We then headed over to the Casino. Played a couple of games but thanks to lack of our experience we lost. But hey had some free drinks at the Casino. Next stop was the famous gardens by the bay!

You would need around 4-5 hours to explore the gardens by the bay. There are two domes – Cloud Forest and The Flower Dome. Both need an entrance ticket which I brought at discounted price online at govoyagin.com. The cloud forest has all ancient plants; its amazing how many plants they have in one place! They had everything from the famous carnivorous plant Venus fly trap to microscopic orchids and they even had those plants which existed during the age of dinosaurs! The huge indoor waterfall which they have created is the main attraction of the cloud forest. You actually get the mist if you stand in front of it!

The Flower Dome was amazing with so many exotic flowers. They had an exquisite display of orchids for the 52nd Birthday of Singapore! I think we picked the right time to visit Singapore, the whole country was getting ready to celebrate its 52nd birthday! I do quiet a bit of gardening myself, and its so hard to maintain flowering plants let alone a huge dome of the most expensive and amazing flowers!

After finishing both the domes, we walked around the gardens and sat around to relax for a while. The next plan was the OCBC Sykway at the supertree groove where they do a musical light show every day at 7:45pm and then again at 8:45pm. The show lasts for 15 mins but make sure you are at the top of the skyway when it starts! I waited till 6:30 then we took tickets to skyway. It had 40 mins waiting time so we got to go to the top at 7:30pm. The musical light show from the top of the skyway was mesmerizing! As the night fell, the city lit up and everything was just so beautiful. You can catch singapore night light from up here! The skyway actually sways due to the wind and if you are scared of heights then you better hold on tight! But it was amazing to see the whole crowd gather up on the lawns below to enjoy the free musical night light show.

Had dinner at the super tree grove, there were many restaurants there although a bit expensive. We had a pizza and pasta for $30. Again finding veg options are a little tough if you go to non Indian restaurants.

We then made our way to the Merlion, where they have the light show every night at 9PM. Finally, took a bus back to our hotel to crash for the day.
